Semiconductor shortage plagues Canon toner cartridges, forcing users to bypass warnings on their printers

Twitter user Mario W. (@mariowitte) posted this tweet yesterday morning in which it states that Canon faces a huge shortage of toner cartridges, forcing users to bypass warnings on their printers.

Canon teaches customers how to bypass future crucial component-free toner cartridges, paving the way for non-Canon cartridges to be used in place of the company’s models

The semiconductor shortage is now affecting printers. This is actually no surprise, as several computer components, such as graphics cards, processors, etc. have experienced shortages over the past year. However, the fact that Canon asks users to bypass printer error messages due to its inability to recognize the cartridge, causing the system to believe that it has a counterfeit cartridge opens compatible cartridges from other manufacturers to use, where appropriate, at lower cost.

For those non-German readers, the translated tweet reads:

Bad World: Due to lack of semiconductors, Canon now produces toner cartridges without “copy protection” and sends emails to customers with instructions on how to work around counterfeit cartridge error messages .

The German branch of Canon’s website is shedding light on the semiconductor problem and offering a temporary solution until parts are available. This is part of Canon’s official press release:

We value you as a customer and regular user of Canon products.

Due to the current global shortage of semiconductor components, Canon is currently facing challenges in sourcing certain electronic components used in our consumables for our multifunction printers (MFPs). These components perform, for example, functions such as detecting the level of remaining toner.

To ensure a continuous and reliable supply of consumables, we have chosen to provide consumables without semiconductor component until normal resumption of supply.

Although there is no negative impact on print quality when consumables are used without electronic components, some additional functions, such as toner level detection, may be affected.

If you receive an error message after inserting one of the printer toner cartridges that are compatible with the corresponding model, here are the instructions on how to use your cartridge:

If this screen appears when using a cartridge with missing protection against lack of suitable components, press the button. Close at the bottom of the screen to continue the printing process.

Your printer’s toner level screen may display an incorrect amount. Actually, it is stated that the level can drop from 100% to 0% as shown below.

The company notes that if you see 0% displayed on the screen, insert a brand new toner cartridge.

For the imageRUNNER 1435i / 1435iF models, they have a separate set of instructions to follow if an error message appears after inserting the toner cartridge:

If the following screen appears when using toner without certain electrical components, press the button. Okay to continue the printing process.

The company warns users not to press the Stop button as shown below.

However, if you have already pressed the button, the following steps will continue the printing process:

  1. Remove the toner from the machine.
  2. Put the toner back into the machine.
  3. hurry Okay to continue printing.

Canon indicates that the following screen may appear:

This screen may appear indicating that the toner level has dropped from Okay at Nothing. Yes Nothing appears as shown in the bottom image, the company claims to insert a new cartridge.

So when Canon comes up with a fix that can last for months or longer, it allows the company to allow users to effectively use a third-party cartridge, usually at a lower cost. This is not necessarily a bad deal from Canon. This is a big enough loophole that is created that the business potentially loses money while waiting for the components to become available.

There is also another downside which is slowly increasing every month. Shortages in all markets, even outside of computer and electronic components, have arisen time and again, causing so far scarce products to be sold on black markets by scalpers at astronomical prices. Many of the biggest companies hit by shortages, such as Intel, NVIDIA and AMD – which we reported daily – said they did not see the market shortage change until 2023, when before the Big Three. technology had said we would see the end in 2022.

The real questions now are, “What’s next? And “When is this going to end?” Unfortunately, even manufacturers can get it wrong, so much of the lead time should be taken as “estimates” until changes in the market are finally confirmed and reported.
